Goal-Setting Made Easy

There is natural progression in the world. This progression is the force that drives the seasons. It is the power that turns an acorn into a magnificent oak. It is the explosion of the germ in a seed and the motivation behind a baby’s cry. The universe is always moving forward and we, as fellow travelers, are moving forward  as well. This is why realistic goal-setting is so important.

Goal-setting is simply the process of mapping your way from Point A to Point B and beyond. It’s that simple. No journey can be made without a good map. The journey of self-improvement is no exception. Goal-setting allows an individual to not only find his or her own way, it also provides a very real way to measure the progress of the journey. Without goal-setting, a traveler on the road of life runs the risk of not only losing their way, but of losing ground as well.

The key to goal-setting is being realistic. The goals that one sets have to be both practical and achievable. Goal-setting is not wishing on a star. If you approach to setting goals is unrealistic and impractical then all you are really doing is setting yourself up for failure. Failure is the most unrealistic and impractical of goals. No one really wants to fail. However, when you set impossibly high standards of achievement, you are really only setting yourself up to stumble and fall.

Keep your goals separated into short-term goals and long-term goals. The short-term goals are those that can be met monthly, weekly or even daily. These are the mile markers of your self improvement journey. They are the ones that can, and should, be easily met within the given time frame. Successfully meeting these short-term goals are the keys to successfully meeting your long-term goals. Regularly meeting these short-term goals will provide you with the motivational energy needed to meet and exceed those longer term goals. In short, without short-term goals you will never reach your long-term goals. The one begets the other.

Your long-term goals need to be as practical and realistic as your short-term goals. It doesn’t matter if your short-term goals are as practical as a pin when your long-term goals are outlandishly unreasonable or even impossible. The one will cancel out the other. Therefore, set your long-term goals as reasonably as your short-term goals. Once this is done, you are sure to get where you want to go within the time you’ve set. The longest journey does indeed start with the smallest, and most well placed, step.
