How To Become Better At Setting Goals?

Article by T.W. Jackson

Setting goals is one of the most important skills we can develop in our lives. Some people have a natural affinity for it while others seem to struggle with every aspect of goal setting. These tips will help you not only set better goals for yourself but also learn the importance of taking ACTION to accomplish the goals you set.

Identify the Needs You have in Your Life

It’s hard to set realistic goals without having a clue as to where you in life, where you’d like to go now, and what you need to take you there. Figure out what your needs are and then set goals that will help you either step up to the plate or get those needs met from someone else.

Once you know what your needs are and have them met you can move on to the bigger and better things that are waiting for you. Getting those needs met is an important goal. Just remember that you’ll constantly need to revisit this step in the process as your needs evolve over time and other needs are met.

Prioritize which Goals need to be Achieved First

Setting goals will help you take your life in the direction YOU want it to go. However, we all have things we’d like to accomplish. In order to accomplish the big picture events we’d love to see in our lives however, there are a lot of little picture things that need to happen first.

It’s the little things that need to become your priority as they light the path to the really big marquis things you want to see taking place in the future. Some refer to these as long and short-term goals. Just remember that all of these short-term goals are designed to help you along the path to where you want to be in life and should be taken just as seriously as your long-term goals. The big things can’t happen without a few little changes taking place first.

Figure out which needs to come first and achieve your goals in the right order for true and lasting success.

Be Selective in Your Goal Setting Efforts

While some people treat this as a smorgasbord or wish list, the most successful goal setters are highly selective in the goals they set and intend to achieve. If you set too many goals at one time you can’t focus on them all.

It’s better to set one big goal and many smaller goals that all lead up to the grand finale and then focusing all your time, attention, and effort to accomplishing that one goal. Otherwise you spread yourself too thin and give up on all your goals because none are being achieved.
