12:00 AM

Anyone could be typing an article at the moment, for fun, for a living or for both. Even if they are working on homework, or studying for a test,
Life is all about screwing up, and trust me, it gives you a lot of space to screw up. But what do you do when you have surrounded yourself with mistakes and never learn from them, never empty the box of mistakes.
I don’t know, but I know I have gotten close to suffocating in the box of mistakes…many times.

I have let my laziness overpower me several times, making me put aside what is important. Right now I should be doing homework, but instead I right an article…the typical thing to do at 12:00AM when you think you have a cold and you have work due the next day is to sleep and feel guilty about not doing it…right? Well instead I am wasting my time writing a horribly structured article. Even as I write, there is a voice saying “stop you have work to do, you are wasting your time.” I am aware of this mistake, but do I take action..no.

Today I stayed home for all but fifth period of school.  The reason for that was that I was sick with a cold and was awake until 2:00AM.  I was woken up around 11:51 AM by my father who informed me that I needed to study.  In my tired state I thought, “Why is he telling me to study, when I told my parents at 2:00 AM that I needed to sleep in because I was sick I never mentioned I would study.”  I asked 30 minutes of extra sleeping, he said 20, I agreed.  In the midst of my extra sleep time I am woken up by my mother’s nervous voice. She asks him to get me out of bed.  Of course I get out because I then realize that I needed to study.

The funny thing right now is I am supposed to be studying for science, but instead I am writing a horribly structured article.

Motivation as the Key to Good Life

With all the problems that come along the way, it is oftentimes hard for a person to maintain a certain level of motivation. This is because more often than not, he or she would only experience failure because he or she wasn’t able to meet the goals and expectations that are set.

However, despite the discouraging times, this is not enough reason to be motivated. In fact, for some people, this can be a good opportunity to start anew. These hard times can serve as a motivation itself for one to be able to overcome difficulties and triumph over life’s adversities. And when handled properly, people can get lifelong lessons from these trying times and use it to live a good and contented life.

HOW TO MOTIVATE ONE’S SELF

Experts say that it is only common for people to feel depression, anxiety and defeat if life has been giving them so many tests and trials. However, instead of feeling depresses and sulking into the taste of defeat, people can use this as an opportunity to make themselves stronger. How? By using these emotions and experiences to motivate his or herself.

Motivating one’s self is indeed one of the best ways to live a good life. This is because if one is motivated well, he or she can set goals that are within his or her reach. He or she can also find ways to deal with defeats without having to feel anxious or depressed over something that may be beyond his or her control. The following are just some of the ways on how people can motivate themselves in these trying times:

1. Never stop learning. Experts say that once people realize that life is never-ending journey to learning, they will be able to find ways to their successes. To keep one’s self-motivated, it is best never stop learning because this opens up to new worlds of possibilities that are waiting to be explored. If one continues learning through read or by trying different things, he or she can gain more confidence to do things and start with new projects. Also, when one continues learning, he or she will acquire newer skills that can add up to the things that he or she can do.

2. Always have a positive outlook in life. This might some easy for some but many people are in fact having a hard time developing and maintaining a positive outlook in life. Maybe because people just have different personalities and different upbringing that affect the way they see life in general. If one wants to be motivated at all times, he or she must start developing a positive outlook in life. This can be done by trying to see the good in bad at all time or whenever possible. If people are able to overcome obstacles, he or she would soon develop the habit of looking for ways that would help him or her overcome that problem.

3. Avoid too much thinking. If possible, stop thinking at all times over something. This is because thinking would only bring in a mix of emotions that could be harder to handle and manage later on. To keep constant self-motivation, one must try to veer away from negative thoughts and only think of the things where he or she could something good.

One must also try not to dwell on things that are beyond control because this will only cloud the positive outlook he or she is trying to build.

More than One Way to Skin a Cat: Adventures in Creative Thinking

How many times have you caught yourself saying that there could be no other solution to a problem – and that that problem leads to a dead end? How many times have you felt stumped knowing that the problem laying before you is one you cannot solve. No leads. No options. No solutions.

Did it feel like you had exhausted all possible options and yet are still before the mountain – large, unconquerable, and impregnable? When encountering such enormous problems, you may feel like you’re hammering against a steel mountain. The pressure of having to solve such a problem may be overwhelming.

But rejoice! There might be some hope yet!

With some creative problem-solving techniques you may be able to look at your problem in a different light. And that light might just be the end of the tunnel that leads to possible solutions.

First of all, in the light of creative problem-solving, you must be open-minded to the fact that there may be more than just one solution to the problem. And, you must be open to the fact that there may be solutions to problems you thought were unsolvable.

Now, with this optimistic mindset, we can try to be a little bit more creative in solving our problems.

Number one; maybe the reason we cannot solve our problems is that we have not really taken a hard look at what the problem is. Here, trying to understanding the problem and having a concrete understanding of its workings is integral solving the problem. If you know how it works, what the problem is, then you have a better foundation towards solving the problem.

Not trying to make the simple statement of what problem is. Try to identify the participating entities and what their relationships with one another are. Take note of the things you stand to gain any stand to lose from the current problem. Now you have a simple statement of what the problem is.

Number two; try to take note of all of the constraints and assumptions you have the words of problem. Sometimes it is these assumptions that obstruct our view of possible solutions. You have to identify which assumptions are valid, in which assumptions need to be addressed.

Number three; try to solve the problem by parts. Solve it going from general view towards the more detailed parts of the problem. This is called the top-down approach. Write down the question, and then come up with a one-sentence solution to that from them. The solution should be a general statement of what will solve the problem. From here you can develop the solution further, and increase its complexity little by little.

Number four; although it helps to have critical thinking aboard as you solve a problem, you must also keep a creative, analytical voice at the back of your head. When someone comes up with a prospective solution, tried to think how you could make that solution work. Try to be creative. At the same time, look for chinks in the armor of that solution.

Number five; it pays to remember that there may be more than just one solution being developed at one time. Try to keep track of all the solutions and their developments. Remember, there may be more than just one solution to the problem.

Number six; remember that old adage,” two heads are better than one.” That one is truer than it sounds. Always be open to new ideas. You can only benefit from listening to all the ideas each person has. This is especially true when the person you’re talking to has had experience solving problems similar to yours.

You don’t have to be a gung-ho, solo hero to solve the problem. If you can organize collective thought on the subject, it would be much better.

Number seven; be patient. As long as you persevere, there is always a chance that a solution will present itself. Remember that no one was able to create an invention the first time around.

Creative thinking exercises can also help you in your quest be a more creative problems solver.

Here is one example.

Take a piece of paper and write any word that comes to mind at the center. Now look at that word then write the first two words that come to your mind. This can go on until you can build a tree of related words. This helps you build analogical skills, and fortify your creative processes.

So, next time you see a problem you think you can not solve, think again. The solution might just be staring you right in the face. All it takes is just a little creative thinking, some planning, and a whole lot of work.
