Attitude Affects Self Improvement

Like everything in our world there are extremes of attitude. Some people have a very positive attitude and others have a very negative attitude. Then there are those, who fluctuate in between on a wide spectrum.

People with a very positive attitude sometimes live in an unrealistic world, where good can be found in every incidence of life. People with a negative attitude have difficulty in finding good in anything.

Ideally, we should strive to find good in many episodes of our lives. However, it should not be expected that good will come from everything that happens to us. We should be prepared to deal with the consequences of negative outcomes without focusing on the negative aspect of all our experiences.

Someone with a very negative attitude about all things will have great difficulty in improving their lot in life. Such a person becomes a drain on everyone he or she has interaction. Most workplaces require significant interaction between personnel.

A key component of self improvement is to be a productive and effective employee, regardless of the position held. Someone with a negative attitude may function well on an assembly line, but such a person could not exist in an environment that required working with other people.

All people have problems and challenges in life and few relish the company of someone with a very negative attitude. People are more easily drawn to people, who are upbeat and less gloomy. Overly negative people can damage the morale of a group and therefore, such a person becomes less desirable to have around.

You may have a great education, excellent credentials, vast experience and be a great worker, but a bad attitude will detract from your overall value in a hurry. On the other hand, a great attitude can compensate when someone’s background lacks the experience and skills necessary for a particular position.

Why do people have negative attitudes? It’s difficult to pinpoint in many cases, but some develop such attitudes at a very early age. Regardless of the reason for having a bad attitude it is something that can be changed. The younger the person is the easier it will be to change. In some cases, the bad attitude is adopted from the parent or guardian. In other cases, it seems to develop all on its own.

Much of one’s attitude is established by how he or she views the world and the people in their world. If you feel everyone is trying to do you harm, it’s likely that you will develop a bad attitude about people. If your job requires you to do things you hate to do, you will probably have a bad attitude about work.

The logical question becomes why a person feels the way they do. What caused them to feel such negativity about people or things? If your life has been filled with episodes of people disappointing you or you have experienced numerous failures in life, it might be valid to have such an attitude.

However, many people who experience disappointment from other people have unrealistic expectations about other people. Expecting people to meet your standards on a given issue will almost always create a sense of disappointment. A person should be satisfied in meeting their own standards and always striving to improve those standards.

With regard to personal failure, it must be determined if there is a pattern to the failures. For example, if you have experienced several failures and discover, through feedback or personal assessment, that the failures always point to a high degree of procrastination on your part, then there is no basis for your poor attitude about failure. Instead, every effort should be made to determine the reason(s) for this character flaw and to eliminate it.

When you gain victory over a character flaw, it will always be a factor in improving your attitude.

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”  Winston Churchill
