Motivation as the Key to Good Life

With all the problems that come along the way, it is oftentimes hard for a person to maintain a certain level of motivation. This is because more often than not, he or she would only experience failure because he or she wasn’t able to meet the goals and expectations that are set.

However, despite the discouraging times, this is not enough reason to be motivated. In fact, for some people, this can be a good opportunity to start anew. These hard times can serve as a motivation itself for one to be able to overcome difficulties and triumph over life’s adversities. And when handled properly, people can get lifelong lessons from these trying times and use it to live a good and contented life.

HOW TO MOTIVATE ONE’S SELF

Experts say that it is only common for people to feel depression, anxiety and defeat if life has been giving them so many tests and trials. However, instead of feeling depresses and sulking into the taste of defeat, people can use this as an opportunity to make themselves stronger. How? By using these emotions and experiences to motivate his or herself.

Motivating one’s self is indeed one of the best ways to live a good life. This is because if one is motivated well, he or she can set goals that are within his or her reach. He or she can also find ways to deal with defeats without having to feel anxious or depressed over something that may be beyond his or her control. The following are just some of the ways on how people can motivate themselves in these trying times:

1. Never stop learning. Experts say that once people realize that life is never-ending journey to learning, they will be able to find ways to their successes. To keep one’s self-motivated, it is best never stop learning because this opens up to new worlds of possibilities that are waiting to be explored. If one continues learning through read or by trying different things, he or she can gain more confidence to do things and start with new projects. Also, when one continues learning, he or she will acquire newer skills that can add up to the things that he or she can do.

2. Always have a positive outlook in life. This might some easy for some but many people are in fact having a hard time developing and maintaining a positive outlook in life. Maybe because people just have different personalities and different upbringing that affect the way they see life in general. If one wants to be motivated at all times, he or she must start developing a positive outlook in life. This can be done by trying to see the good in bad at all time or whenever possible. If people are able to overcome obstacles, he or she would soon develop the habit of looking for ways that would help him or her overcome that problem.

3. Avoid too much thinking. If possible, stop thinking at all times over something. This is because thinking would only bring in a mix of emotions that could be harder to handle and manage later on. To keep constant self-motivation, one must try to veer away from negative thoughts and only think of the things where he or she could something good.

One must also try not to dwell on things that are beyond control because this will only cloud the positive outlook he or she is trying to build.

- 1. Set goals. The evidence is clear.  People who actually clarify and write out their goals are infinitely more likely to achieve them than the people who don’t.  Make them clear and specific.  Energetically, there’s a big difference between, “Make more money this year,” and “earn at least $100,000 in 2010.” State your goals in a clear and measurable way, so that it is easy to tell whether or not you have achieved the goal.

2. Align your goals with your purpose. The clearer you are about your purpose, about what ignites your passion and is truly “on track,” for you in your life, the more energy you’ll naturally have as you pursue your goals, and the less likely you’ll be to get distracted or discouraged along the way.  Not clear on your purpose? Stay tuned for an upcoming article on Honing in on Your Purpose.

3. Decide to make your relationships even better! Make a list of your relationships with family, friends and co-workers and look at how you could improve them.  How would you rate each of your relationships on a scale from 1 to 10?  What could you do, or stop doing, to increase that rating?  Make a decision to raise the rating of each relationship, and create a plan!

4. Create time and space for yourself. Running on empty can be the fastest way to sabotage your goals. What refuels you?  Even if it’s just 10 minutes a day to sit still and do nothing – Make Time for Yourself!  Start small, maybe 5 minutes a day of movement (sun salutes are a simple and powerful yoga exercise that will really get your blood pumping and your body loosened up, even in only 5 minutes) and 5 minutes of sitting (meditation is great, but so is just plain old day dreaming).  After a week of 5 minutes of each, see if you can increase this to 10.  In a month or two, work your way up to 20 minutes a day of movement, and 20 minutes a day of sitting.  By the way, sitting in a tub of warm water doubles or even triples the relaxation benefit!

5. Create support structures for yourself and your goals. Have you noticed how hard it can be to keep promises to yourself?  Or to sustain a new routine in the face of all the old “pulls” on your time?  So much of what we do minute by minute, day by day, is shaped by the world around us – by our environments.  By creating structures of support –carpool with friends to the gym, have lunch and swap recipes with a friend who is also changing their eating habits, join a mastermind group to brainstorm and get support – all of these can make a vital difference in your success.  Or you can consider something simple like keeping the TV remote control in another room, in a locked drawer far away from the TV.

These are just a few ideas to help you change old habits, and create space in your life for more of what matters most to you, like working on that new business idea, or spending more quality time with friends and family.

It’s time – the turn of the year is a fabulous opportunity to deliberately create your life to be the way you want it to be.

Remember when you were a kid and your parents told you that you could do anything you set your mind to … even if you wanted to become the president of the United States?

I do!

I can almost feel the same excitement I felt when they told me. I was excited to one day play in the NBA the NFL and I’d also be an all star pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. If someone would have asked me if I truly believed that I could accomplish all those things I would have said, “Of course I can, my parents told me I could do anything if I set my mind to it!”

What was it that you wanted to accomplish?

Did you want to be the president of the United States, the most successful lawyer in your town, a doctor, or an incredibly successful business person?

It doesn’t really matter what you wanted to be back then or if you even achieved any of these things. The point is you had an incredible amount of faith that it could happen back then because the world hadn’t told you “NO” enough, and you truly believed anything was possible.

One of my best friends growing up was Matt Severance. I used to spend the night at his house quite a bit on the weekends. We would sit at his house and talk on the phone to girls all evening long but, every couple hours he would hang up and watch sports center.

I used to get annoyed because it was the same show over and over with the exact same content. Matt didn’t care. He told me one day he was going to be a sports writer for a newspaper. He absolutely believed that was what he was going to be and he began taking the actions required to accomplish this feat.

Well … he did it!

Let’s fast forward a decade or three and take a look at where you are today. How many times have you found yourself saying the following?

“I wish I was making more money!”

or

“One of these days I am going to start a business, or get a new job”

or

“I am going to start a diet tomorrow and I’ll lose this over-sized behind.”

As we get older and enough people laugh at us, tell us “NO”, or tell us there is no way we can do that … we begin to give up. Well, at least most people do!

The most successful people in this world NEVER STOP BELIEVING they can accomplish anything. Not only that. They never stop setting goals. They don’t just say, “someday I’ll do this or that.”

Successful people define exactly what it is they are going to accomplish, they set a deadline, they put it in writing, they share it with other people, and they just plain get it done!

They don’t make excuses or give up when things get difficult. They have a laser-like focus on the result they want in their life and they will do anything possible to make it a reality.

Do you know the difference between successful people and unsuccessful people?

Unsuccessful people don’t take time to set goals, and if they do they don’t write them down or share them with anyone else. They’ve basically gotten to the point where they’ve given up on having anymore then they have, and have bought into all the “NOs” they’ve heard over the years.

If you happen to be someone that isn’t happy with where you are at this moment in your life, and the sentences above make you cringe at how much it sounds like you. I have some great news for you!

You can immediately change and begin to achieve great things like the most successful people achieve.

All you need to do is spend time setting goals that resemble the circumstances you’d like to receive.

Whether it is to be earning an extra $1,000 per month, or to become a millionaire in the next 3-5 years. It doesn’t matter how lofty the goal is.

You simply NEED TO SET YOUR GOAL! Once you’ve set the goal you need to put a deadline on that goal and then take the actions necessary to achieve it.

Is it truly that simple? Yes.

Will you have obstacles? Of course!

The biggest obstacle you’ll need to overcome is the fear of failing. Believe me … that is something you absolutely can’t let get in your way. You should be much more scared of living your life without accomplishing everything you’ve dreamed of. If you fail enough times you’ll eventually succeed! Any successful person will tell you just that!

I’d love to hear examples of people you know who achieved the goals they set when they were younger and had the focus and drive to accomplish those goals just like my buddy Matt.

I’d also love it if these words have helped give you that little push and you are going to change the course of your life. If it has please leave a comment and let us all know you are going to be setting your goals and if you’d like leave what those goals are in your comment! We’ll be your biggest cheerleaders! :)
