Self-Improvement is NOT Selfish!

“Self-improvement is sometimes lonely business. It may even seem selfish at times, but the least selfish thing you can do for others is to improve your “self.” If you really want to help others, make yourself better. That’s how you become a better resource to your family, your business, your community, and the world. If everyone is simply focused on being the best they can be, it all works out!” From Think Like a Black Belt.

There is nothing selfish about self-improvement. I’d argue that it’s selfish not to commit yourself to continual personal development. I’d argue further that it’s your responsibility to improve yourself- continually!

Stop improving yourself and you’ll likely become one of the many self-disenfranchised people we see today. I’m talking about those who continually blame others for their current circumstances, demand entitlements without personal investment and refuse to take personal responsibility for changing their destinies.

Sometimes when I talk about this subject I’m challenged by people who question my compassion. After all there are people who genuinely need help. There are times when someone needs to step in to assure justice and fair treatment. I agree- I’d add that the people I’m talking about take resources away from people with authentic need.

Part of the problem is that we’ve abdicated personal responsibility to the degree that it is no longer a personal moral obligation to care for others; it’s become a societal obligation. While there are areas where working together through our institutions can be effective and efficient it’s very dangerous to depend on those institutions. We’re seeing those dangers manifest as our institutional social programs face bankruptcy.

Ultimately, surrendering personal responsibility is surrendering personal freedom. This can happen on a national level, but it’s just as likely to happen on a personal level and this danger is clear and present every day. It happens when you slack at work because you feel underappreciated. It happens when you complain that you’re not getting enough assistance instead of appreciating any help you get. It happens when you blame the guy who has more than you for the fact that you don’t have what you want.

Within the scope of your talents and abilities anything is possible. I do not mean that as a positive thinking platitude or pick-me-up- it’s a fact. When you decide to take the bull by the balls and take full and solitary responsibility for your success and happiness you cannot fail. You will craft success within your means and hopefully you’ll learn to be happy along the way. You may expand your capabilities well beyond what you previous thought possible.

Nobody else can break barriers for you. Dependency does not forge excellence- it enables complacency. Appreciate the help of others- stand on your own. Acknowledge the contributions of others to your effort and recognize your own. Build your own success and you own the rewards- emotionally, spiritually as well as materially.

“…commit yourself to continual self-perfection, and don’t expect anyone to do this work for you.

“These days too many people expect others to make life better for them. It is nobody else’s job to make your life better; but it is your job to express your gratitude if they do. If someone gives you a job, be grateful. If someone gives you an opportunity, a place to live, a scholarship, or help with feeding your children; be grateful. If someone kicks you in the ass once in a while, be grateful!

“If you want more, take responsibility for your own happiness and go get it for yourself!”
