How to Tell a Joke
By Paul Sloane
Many people shy away from telling jokes because they once told one that fell flat or they are afraid of appearing silly or of offending someone. Jokes are canned humorous stories which are subtly different from personal anecdotes. With personal anecdotes you have the authority to tell them because they happened to you. Jokes are independent and in a sense artificial so you take a little risk when you launch into one. However, when told well, a joke can cause great amusement and lift the mood of the gathering. A speaker who puts some relevant and well-told jokes into his or her speech will be appreciated by the audience who are often bored with bland presentations and are crying out for a little entertainment.

Here are some tips on how to tell a good joke:

1. Select. Choose three or four jokes that really tickled you from the internet or a joke book. If you are giving a talk or presentation look for ones that have some relevance (however slight) so that you can work them into the pitch. Have one or two generic or topical ones that you can use on any occasion.

2. Practise. Practise them aloud - in front of a mirror if possible. Deliver them with style, confidence and panache. Focus on the punch line and ensure that you can deliver it word perfect.

3. Choose your Moment. If there is a convenient hook in the conversation for one of your jokes you can introduce it then. Otherwise wait for a pause. Sometimes the most amusing jokes occur when people least expect the teller to tell a joke. So, if appropriate, be serious as you introduce the story and then catch your audience out with the punch line.

4. Deliver slowly and with confidence. Many people ruin jokes by rushing them, mumbling incoherently or just getting the words wrong. Your practice should have overcome this but there is still a temptation to hurry. Slow down a little. Try to pause for effect before you deliver the punch line. That can add enormously to the impact.

5. Match the joke to the audience. A joke which is hilarious with the guys on the 7th tee might well be a disaster at the Church Bazaar. Jokes often challenge taboos so it is OK to risk a tiny amount of offence to one or two people. But if your joke seriously offends people then you were guilty of misjudgment. In mixed company during the day you should stay with safe material. In the evening you can be a little more risqué and with the men in the bar you can be outrageous. Choose wisely.

6. Reciprocate. Never finish anyone else’s joke. Always laugh or smile even if you have heard it before. Be a good joke teller and receiver.

7. Develop. As you build experience and confidence try more and different jokes. But don’t overdo it. Don’t hog the conversation with one joke after another. A few really good jokes that you can tell with perfect confidence is the aim.

Funny jokes make the world a more interesting place. Enjoy your joke telling!

Mustapha Mond paused, put down the first book and, picking up the other, turned over the pages. “Take this, for example,” he said, and in his deep voice once more began to read: “‘A man grows old; he feels in himself that radical sense of weakness, of listlessness, of discomfort, which accompanies the advance of age; and, feeling thus, imagines himself merely sick, lulling his fears with the notion that this distressing condition is due to some particular cause, from which, as from an illness, he hopes to recover. Vain imaginings! That sickness is old age; and a horrible disease it is. They say that it is the fear of death and of what comes after death that makes men turn to religion as they advance in years. But my own experience has given me the conviction that, quite apart from any such terrors or imaginings, the religious sentiment tends to develop as we grow older; to develop because, as the passions grow calm, as the fancy and sensibilities are less excited and less excitable, our reason becomes less troubled in its working, less obscured by the images, desires and distractions, in which it used to be absorbed; whereupon God emerges as from behind a cloud; our soul feels, sees, turns towards the source of all light; turns naturally and inevitably; for now that all that gave to the world of sensations its life and charms has begun to leak away from us, now that phenomenal existence is no more bolstered up by impressions from within or from without, we feel the need to lean on something that abides, something that will never play us falsea reality, an absolute and everlasting truth. Yes, we inevitably turn to God; for this religious sentiment is of its nature so pure, so delightful to the soul that experiences it, that it makes up to us for all our other losses.’” Mustapha Mond shut the book and leaned back in his chair. “One of the numerous things in heaven and earth that these philosophers didn’t dream about was this” (he waved his hand), “us, the modern world. ‘You can only be independent of God while you’ve got youth and prosperity; independence won’t take you safely to the end.’ Well, we’ve now got youth and prosperity right up to the end. What follows? Evidently, that we can be independent of God. ‘The religious sentiment will compensate us for all our losses.’ But there aren’t any losses for us to compensate; religious sentiment is superfluous. And why should we go hunting for a substitute for youthful desires, when youthful desires never fail? A substitute for distractions, when we go on enjoying all the old fooleries to the very last? What need have we of repose when our minds and bodies continue to delight in activity? of consolation, when we have soma? of something immovable, when there is the social order?”

Have Thank You Notes Died With Emily Post?
By Jackie Trottmann
My eighteen year old son just graduated from high school - a milestone. He is fortunate to have two grandmothers still alive along with a grand-father through my second marriage and many proud aunts and uncles. With the graduation came some nice celebratory gifts. Before I could get the words out of my mouth he said with a drone, “Yes, Mom, I know, I am going to send thank you notes.” He actually went out and purchased cards appropriate to the given personalities of each person with a personal hand-written note.

In this world of instant messaging, text messaging, emailing, etc., it is on rare occasions to write or receive thank you notes. If there is one single thing that you can do to set yourself apart from the pack in business, it’s to write thank you notes.

Don’t just take it from me. The website CareerBuilder.com just conducted a recent survey. When interviewing for a possible position 15% of hiring managers rejected a job applicant who failed to send a follow up thank you. 32% said that they would consider those not sending a thank you note but that their opinion of him or her would diminish. 23% preferred a hand written note.

My mother always taught me to send thank you notes. Being in the industry of sales, I was surprised to learn that hardly any of my colleagues sent thank you notes.

While Emily Post may not physically be with us anymore, as an icon when it comes etiquette, thankfully, her legacy lives on through her family members and The Emily Post Institute to bring our world some semblance of manners.

Let me tell you a personal story about the power of a thank you. Our house was in need of being painted on the outside. It’s an older home with a stucco finish. When the painter gave us the bid he proceeded to tell us that our wooden windows were in such bad shape that he recommended having them replaced because the cost associated with scraping, repairing and painting would be a waste of money. We contacted a replacement window company that advertised regularly on the radio. They happened to be having a sale and we went to the showroom. Summer was coming to an end and we wanted the windows installed before winter. We decided right on the spot to plunk down the rather large investment required to replace every window. The sales representative was wonderful and even gave us an additional 10% off because of a special sale they were having the next day on top of the 40% discount we received. Walking away from the showroom we felt a dread come over us. While we felt that we did well, we hadn’t shopped around and made a substantial impulse purchase without doing a lot of homework. A few days later, a thank you note came in the mail. That was a nice touch. What was really amazing though was what happened after we came home after running some errands. A few days later, we had a message on our phone. When we retrieved the message it was from the president of the window company personally thanking us for our purchase and for choosing them. Wow! Did we feel great! Any buyer’s remorse we felt went, well, out the window! The installation went as planned and the difference it has made in our home is wonderful. All of the attributes about the windows that the sales person talked to us about, energy saving, quiet, easy to open, easy to clean, etc. are all true. But I have to tell you, it was the phone call from the president that put me more at ease.

Here’s a little idea for you this year. Instead of being buried in a sea of Christmas cards, send a Thanksgiving card this year. How many Thanksgiving cards do you receive in the mail?

This small gesture will make a huge difference in being remembered.
