Birth control is traditionally thought of as a women’s issue, and that’s unfortunate. While women obviously have a lot to gain or lose when it comes to birth control issues, it would be a mistake to assume men don’t also hold an important stake in this area. Men, after all, are on the hook for child support a full 18 years with practically no say in the birth or abortion decision after the deed is done. Many women, it seems, would like to keep it this way.

Unfortunately, the so-called medical breakthrough known as the male birth control pill has hit many roadblocks from negative male stereotyping to lack of funding at big pharmaceutical companies. On the surface, it seems the majority of the population, both men and women, are all for the widespread use of a male birth control pill. Under the covers, however, a different story emerges.

For the first time in history, use of the male pill will help men finally know for certain there is absolutely no possibility of impregnating their partner. With this responsibility comes great power at the expense of the female gender. Consider the fact that in many states, a DNA paternity test is not admissible as proof a man is not the father of a woman’s child. That is, if a woman says you are the father, the court tends to automatically agree and it is extremely difficult to prove otherwise even though DNA tests are both accurate and inexpensive. Couple that with the fact that child support often ranges 15% or more of a man’s take-home pay and you see the potential for deceit. The male pill, of course, would change this. Simply saying “I can’t be the father, I was on the pill!” will carry water in court. Many women, understandably, are quite concerned with the possibility one of their few areas of strength will be removed from them.

The primary delay for the male pill, however, is lack of demand. Big pharma, of course, won’t produce the male pill unless it thinks it can sell enough to recoup research and development costs. Negative male stereotypes - the idea that taking the pill makes one less of a man - is largely to blame for this. Everybody, both male and female, should take full responsibility for their reproductive activities. It is not enough to rely on your partner to do their part so you don’t have to do yours. Birth control is something every man should take seriously.

As a sociologist, I see this is as the last gasp of the dinosaur. As a wedding celebrant and a human being I am disappointed in people’s narrowness and fear. Love is so much bigger than fear. I believe it will be changed, but we don’t know when. So, what’s the best thing to do?

I think the best thing ordinary gay couples can do to move marriage rights forward, as both personal action and political, is to continue to get married. Call it a wedding. Call it a marriage. Don’t get married in a hasty wedding ceremony. Plan your wedding with great attention to your wedding vows, your wedding ceremony, and your community. Let the reception take its cue from that. These are difficult times. You need your commitment to love and honor one another as you weather the discrimination.

Wedding Vows First: (This is as crucial to your marriage as it is to any marriage. Get your vows right for you.)

Why are you getting married to your partner?
What do the two of you hope to accomplish with your marriage?
How do your long-term goals fit together? What are your shared goals?
